Mitch Wickham won the NSW age 15 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship at the weekend in Sydney.

Father Matt Wickham competed in the master division.

Mitch’s victory came in the 54-56kg division, again being placed in a heavier division as he only weighs 44kg.

After sustaining a foot injury the week before the tournament, Mitch battled well against taller and heavier opponents.

The first match went the full distance and the second match saw Mitch finish his opponent quickly with an armbar submission to take the gold medal.

Matt met a younger and stronger opponent and attempted a surprise attack from the opening bell.

He defended a few choke attempts but ran out of steam six minutes into the eight-minute time limit.

Mitch will compete in Tasmania in July before heading back to NSW for the Sydney Cup.
