Moama Anglican Grammar student Mitch Wickham can lay claim to a state title.
At just 15 years of age.
He has followed up his featuring in last year’s Sports Star nominations – courtesy of a gold medal performance in Melbourne – with a New South Wales Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship in July.
Mitch won the 54-56 kilogram division, but consider this.
He weighs 44 kilos.
So something of a pint-sized powerhouse, then against bigger bodies.
Making his achievement all the more impressive.
Mitch’s story gets better.
He carried a foot injury into the tournament.
Bout one wasn’t decided on the mat and went to the judges’ scorecards.
But Mitch wasn’t going to let that happen twice.
In the decider he went for a fast finish.
Via armbar submission.
Another gold medal won.
And he’s going places again before the end of the year.
And with that winning form, well into the future, too.
“Mitch battled well against taller and heavier opponents” – Mitch’s father, instructor Matt Wickham
