WESTERN Australia’s Gary Kelly has taken out the High Gun as the best shooter at the Victorian Trap Shooting Championships at the Echuca Gun Club on the weekend.

Kelly, who also claimed the single barrel championship, said he felt like he was producing some of the best shooting of his life.

‘‘I’m really happy with how I’m shooting at the moment,’’ Kelly said.

‘‘I’ve been seeing them really well and have been extremely happy with how I’ve shot this weekend.’’

Kelly, who has been shooting for nearly 20 years, said it was a great achievement to claim the highest honour.

‘‘In my time I haven’t been the High Gun winner, so getting to claim the award in this tournament is a great honour,’’ he said.

Echuca’s Casey Fletcher was runner-up in the single barrel championship.

More than 400 competitors took to the traps at the weekend from across the country.

Echuca Gun Club president Stephen Atkins said it was great to see such a strong turnout.

‘‘To have this kind of crowd make it down is wonderful. We have turned on the weather as we so often do so it’s been a great weekend,’’ Atkins said.

‘‘Being able to host an event like this, knowing we have more on the radar, its really shows that the work we did to improve the facilities at the club was a great investment.’’
