ECHUCA basketball’s future continues to look bright with two local prospects earning selection for teams to play across the Tasman.

Throughout the season, the junior Pirates sides have seen mixed results across their many tournaments.

But last weekend two of their up and coming stars put on stellar performances at the Albury Cup.

Maia Roberts, representing the Victorian Bushrangers under 14 girls, and Will Rohde, representing the under 14 boys Victorian Goldminers side, put forward strong performances that have seen both selected for teams to participate in the New Zealand Cup tour.

Roberts was selected for the main group after an outstanding competition.

She top scored in multiple games for the Bushrangers, consistently cracking double figures on the scoring side of the game.

Outside of scoring, her overall play saw her put in one of the best performances of any Bushrangers player throughout the tournament.

The Bushrangers were the form side of the competition, finishing with a perfect five wins from five games.

Will’s tournament also saw some strong team success.

His Goldminers finished with a record of three wins and two losses, completing the tournament in fourth spot for their section.

He wasn’t the dominant force of the team, but rather the solid contributor holding his teammates together.

His tournament did see him selected as a travelling emergency for the New Zealand cup.

The Echuca Basketball Association said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the association could not be prouder.

‘‘It’s a huge effort to go away for a week with complete strangers and to still be able to play amazing basketball and to be selected for this tour is a credit to you both,’’ read the association’s post.

The tour will take place at Easter this year.
